Massena Central School District Wellness Committee

 About the Wellness Committee

The school wellness committee is the advisory group that is concerned with the health and wellbeing of students and staff. The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 requires that a wellness committee be formed at the district level and include representation from each school building.

School wellness committees bring school staff, families, students and community members together to address pressing student health issues. They also may:

  • Advise the school board/district on school/community health issues
  • Coordinate efforts and programs that exist in the district and the community
  • Identify student/staff health needs
  • Monitor and evaluate implementation of district health and wellness policies and programs
  • Massena Central School District is participating in the Health Initiative’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities project.

News & Notes

District Receives Grant Funding for PE Equipment
In March of 2016, the District began a 5 year initiative to reduce major risk factors of obesity, type II diabetes and other chronic diseases among students. The approach tackled revisiting and revamping our wellness policy, establish a comprehensive school physical activity program and increase school districts ability to meet Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 nutrition standards for foods sold outside of school meals.

Over the last several months, the Wellness Committee has worked diligently with the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative, to complete a grant application and purchase equipment and games to help promote healthy choices.

Massena Central School District was awarded $2,500 per school for a total of $12,500 for the District for the 2015-2016 school year. The funds this year have been allocated to new PE equipment to be used in classes and by the community. Many of these items help introduce our students to fun games and activities that don’t necessarily require them to be an athlete, but do require students to get up and move.

Thank you to the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative, Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Project, and funding from the New York State Department of Health for making this possible.
